Beloved star of the stage, television and film, Timothy West has died aged 90.
Famous for his appearances in Eastenders, Coronation Street and the series Great Canal Journeys, the actor had been a household favourite since the 1960’s.
Timothy West: well-loved actor in a myriad of television and stage roles
West was a well-loved actor who played leading roles in Uncle Vanya, Death of a Salesman, Macbeth and, on four occasions, King Lear. He was also capable of getting into character on stage and screen for real-life roles including designer William Morris and political figures like Mikhail Gorbachev, Joseph Stalin and Winston Churchill.
West awarded a CBE in 1984 for his dedication to film and television
His eclectic personality meant he could adapt smoothly to a myriad of humorous, serious and even royal characters. Many may remember him playing Edward VII in the 1975 series of the same name or the beekeeper in Roald Dahl’s short story adaptation of Royal Jelly in 1980. West even got a taste of the legendary Dickens, starring in Oliver Twist, Hard Times and Bleak House. Needless to say, the Bradford-born actor was awarded a CBE in 1984.
Great Canal Journeys : heartwarming series starring West and his wife
Alongside his wife, Prunella Scales, who was a classic favourite in the well-known comedy series, ‘Fawlty Towers,’ and with whom he was married for 61 years, he ran the Great Canal Journeys series, a funny and moving programme that reflected his family’s passion for narrowboats and also provided a heartwarming insight into his wife’s battle with dementia.
West leaves behind his wife as well as three children: Juliet, Samuel and Joseph. They issued a statement about their father: ‘After a long and extraordinary life on and off the stage, our darling father, Timothy West, died peacefully in his sleep yesterday evening. He was 90 years old.’
