Schools are closed, many supermarkets are keeping their shutters down, and public services will not be opening.

That’s the latest from local authorities and the provincial government in Malaga, who have elevated the threat of emergency to ‘level 1’. The red alert’ from AEMET, the state meteorological service, is being taken more seriously than ever in the light of the disaster at the end of October and in preparation for what could be unusually heavy rainfall.

A cold front sweeping down from the Northeast is due to meet a terral of warm air moving up from the Sahara and meeting directly over the Costa del Sol.

Those that need emergency grocery shopping are being advised to go to their local Tesco store which is open this morning, November 13 although for how long is anybody s guess.  Already other local supermarkets including Aldi, and Lidl have made the decision to close their stores given the imminent threat of extreme weather conditions

Universities will remain closed for the day as well, and homes near rivers and large bodies of water in the Guardalhorce Valley have been temporarily left empty as local people have been asked to leave until the threat has passed. Somewhere in the region of 3,000 people slept on higher ground on Tuesday, November 12. The DGT is advising drivers not to use their vehicles at all on Wednesday until the threat has passed.

Threat level implies threat to life and property

The threat level (red) implies possible damage to property and a danger to those who remain outside or near areas prone to flooding. For the first time ever, a warning with a piercing noise was activated across all mobile phones in certain areas of the region between 10.30pm and 11pm on Tuesday night.

Malaga city, towns in the Guardalhorce Valley, and the Costa del Sol and Axarquía all received the warning, alerting the population to keep safe and not make any non-vital journeys on Wednesday 13 where it is predicted that rainfall could reach between 120 and 150 litres of water per m2 in just 12 hours.
